Football Team Academic All Ohio

January 7, 2013

The Ohio High School Football Coaches Association has recognized the Avon High School 2012 Football Team as Academic All Ohio. This is a true measure of the combination of academic achievement and athletic excellence. To qualify, the grade point averages of the top 22 lettermen were averaged and ranked. Only 20 of the more than 700 high schools in Ohio qualify for this prestigious award. Avon's rank was 8th in the state. Congratulations to the 2012 Avon Eagle Football Team!

The Ohio High School Football Coaches Association has recognized Kevin Skotko and Alex Kelly as Academic All Ohio football players. To qualify, the nominee must have senior standing, must be recognized as a first team selection at the all conference, all county or all district level in addition to demonstrating academic distinction with a grade point average of 3.60 or better. Only 101 of the more than 35,000 high school football players in Ohio qualify for this award. Congratulations to both Kevin and Alex on a job well done, both on and off the field!

Junior linebacker Kevin Maloney runs after recovering a fumnble

The Avon defense set the tone early, holding Tiffin to a three-and-out on their first posession, and continued to frustrate the Tornadoes all night. Junior linebacker Kevin Maloney had a huge night, intercepting a pass and recovering three fumbles. The Eagles offense was able to capitalize on the turnovers in route to a 28-11 victory over Tiffin.

The Eagles will face Toledo Central Catholic Friday in the OHSAA Regional Final at Clyde Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:30PM.

Senior Mark Kvach grinds out some tough yards in the second half

Avon came out strong in the second half to win the quarter-final playoff game over Perrysburg, 28-11. After being held scoreless in the first half, the Eagles scored four touchdowns to put away the Yellow Jackets.

The Eagles will face Tiffin Columbian Friday in the OHSAA Regional Semi-Final at Fremont Ross Harmon Field @ Don Paul Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:30PM. Click here for a map and directions to the stadium.


Eagles Win WSC; Playoffs Next!

Seniors Alex Lelly, Kevin Skotko, David Zeh and Michael Healey hoist the WSC trophy

Avon won the outright WSC championship on Friday for the third consecutive year. The Eagles thumped the visiting Rangers 41-7 to close out a perfect WSC schedule (9-1 overall, 7-0 in the WSC). The potent Eagle offense scored 41 unanswered points while the defense allowed only six North Ridgeville first downs the entire night.

Congratulations to Coach Elder, his staff and the entire Avon football team!

At halftime, senior Ross Douglas was introduced as a member of the prestigious 2013 Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl to be played on January 4th in Carson, CA. This nationally televised bowl features the nation’s best and brightest high school football players.

Freshman Football - WSC Champs!

The Avon Eagles freshmen football team won the WSC championship after defeating North Ridgeville 33-13 on Thursday afternoon. The win gives them a 9-1 record to conclude the season. Davion Rojas had 2 touchdown receptions and threw for one as well to Michael Nose. Austin Lewis and Gerett Choat each ran for a score. The defense finished the season strong, giving up less than 6 points a game over the last 5 games. Thanks to everyone involved for a successful season.

Eagles Prevail Over Pirates

Senior Ross Douglas carries the ball for a first down

Avon needed a late game surge to beat Rocky River on Friday night, 42-21. The game was tied 21-21 as the teams entered the fourth quarter, but the Eagles scored three unanswered touchdowns, two by Ross Douglas and one by Mark Kvach, to seal the victory. Douglas scored five touchdowns while running for over 210 yards. The Eagles defense shackled the Pirate offense in the fourth quarter, junior safety Logan Juhl had a big interception late in the game.

With the win, Avon secured a share of the WSC champioship as they improved to 8-1 (6-0 in WSC). The Eagles host North Ridgeville on Friday to end the regular season schedule, kickoff is @ 7:00PM.

Freshman Football Recap

October 19, 2012

The freshmen football team continued their winning ways with a 32-0 victory over Rocky River last night. Gerett Choat had 3 rushing TD's and Tyler Matuszak and Carter Rudy added 1 score each. The defense continues its strong play with a second consecutive shutout and have only given up a total of 15 points in the last 4 games. The freshmen Eagles improve to 8-1 with the win, their 5th straight, and close out their season at North Ridgeville next Thursday, October 25th at 4:30. Go Eagles.

The Freshmen football team defeated Midview on Thursday by a score of 41-8. It was a complete team effort as everyone on the team contributed to the victory. Offensively, the Eagles rushed for 3 TD's with Gerett Choat scoring twice and Kyle Hermann scoring once on the ground. Jake Sopko threw a touchdown to Carter Rudy and Davion Rojas threw a touchdown as time expired in the first half to Jason Santora. The scoring also included a blocked punt that was picked up and returned for a score by Ben Slater. Defensively, the Eagles held the Middies to one score and caused several turnovers, including 2 interceptions. With the win, the freshmen Eagles improve to 6-1 on the season and 3-1 in the WSC. Go Eagles!


Freshman Football Recap

October 12, 2012

The Freshmen football team defeated Vermilion by a score of 49-0. Offensively, Quarterbacks Jake Sopko and Chad Botson combined to throw for 3 scores with scoring receptions going to Tyler Matuszak, Carter Rudy, and Michael Nose. Gerett Choat, Austin Lewis, and Parker Reynolds each scored on the ground, and arguably the biggest play of the game which rounded out the scoring came on defense, when Zaviel Ramos returned an interception for a touchdown. With the win, the Freshmen Eagles improve to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the WSC. The team returns to action next Thursday when they host the Rocky River Pirates in a WSC showdown. Go Eagles!

The Eagles offense was potent and efficient on Friday, resulting in a 49-20 win over the Sailors. Quarterback David Zeh threw three touchdown passes while the defense held Vermilion scoreless in the first half as the Eagles led 35-0. Seniors Mark Kvach and Michael Healey rounded out the scoring for Avon in the second half.

With the win, Avon improved to 7-1 (5-0 in WSC). The Eagles travel to Rocky River on Friday to battle the Pirates, kickoff is @ 7:00PM.

Eagles Defense Mashes Midview

The Avon defense blanked Midview on Friday, recording a convincing 28-0 victory over the Middies. Both the offensive and defensive lines dominated the game for Avon, causing havoc for Midview on both sides of the ball. Senior running back Ross Douglas gained 140 yards, while senior linebacker Kevin Skotko had an interception.

With the win, Avon improved to 6-1 (4-0 in WSC). The Eagles host Vermilion on Friday at 'The Nest', kickoff is @ 7:00PM.

Eagles Celebrate Homecoming; Beat Bay

Despite the rain and wind, Avon weathered the elements to beat Bay on Friday night, 42-7. With the win on Homecoming Night, Avon improved to 4-1 (2-0 in WSC). Sporting special gold jerseys, the Eagles jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead as Ross Douglas sandwiched two TD runs around Junior linebacker Alex Habeeb's 'pick-six'. Ross had a huge night, scoring four touchdowns while running for 163 yards on 21 carries (Ross also had an interception).

The Eagles travel to Elyria Catholic this Friday to battle the Panthers, gametime is 7:00PM.

Senior Ralph Smith had a big night, scoring three touchdowns

Avon improved to 3-1 (1-0 in WSC) with a convincing 35-3 victory over Lakewood on Friday night. The Eagles defense was again stingy, holding the Rangers to a second quarter field goal and nothing more. Senior Ralph Smith had five catches for 206 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Eagles, Ross Douglas also had two touchdown runs.

The JV squad defeated Lakewood, 24-13 on Saturday morning.

The win on Friday was also a milestone for Coach Elder, as he earned his 100th career victory. Since becoming head coach at Avon, Coach Elder has tallied 50 wins! Congratulations Coach Elder!

The Eagles will host Bay on Friday @ 7:00PM as part of Homecoming Weekend.

Senior Ross Douglas carries the ball in the first quarter

Avon jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead on Lorain and finished with a 40-14 victory over the Titans. The Eagles offense was running on all cylinders while the defense locked down the Titans offense.

The JV squad also defeated Lorain, 34-0 on Saturday morning. The Eagles will host new WSC member school Lakewood on Friday @ 7:00PM.


Freshman Football

September 7, 2012

The Freshmen football team defeated the Lorain Titans last night by a score of 28-18. Davion Rojas had 2 receiving touchdowns, Vince Gargaro had 1, and Austin Lewis ran one in to round out the scoring. With the win, the freshmen Eagles improve to 3-0 on the season. The team returns to action next Thursday, September 13th to play at Lakewood at 4:00.


Freshman Football Defeats Shaker Hts!

August 31, 2012

The Freshmen football team defeated Shaker Heights last night by a score of 34-20. The Eagles rallied to score 26 unanswered points late in the second half to prevail on the road. The offense was led by Quarterback Jake Sopko who threw for a touchdown and ran for one as well. Austin Lewis and Gerett Choat combined for 3 rushing touchdowns and Jason Santora caught a touchdown pass as well. It was a complete team effort as the offense started clicking, the defense hung tough, and the special teams unit converted two onside kicks in taking control of the game late.

The Freshmen Eagles return to action next Thursday, September 6 to host the Lorain Titans at 4:30pm. Go Eagles!!

Senior QB David Zeh runs for a first down

Avon fell to Avon Lake in the football season opener on Friday by a score of 42-28. With the game tied 28-28 in the fourth quarter, the Shoremen were able to move ahead and hold on for the victory.

The Eagles' JV and freshman football teams defeated Avon Lake.

Avon will host Wellington in the home opener on Friday, game time is 7:00PM. Come out and support the team!
