STATE BOUND!

June 1, 2009

Senior Christina Herbst qualified for the OHSAA State Track and Field Championship this past weekend. Christina won the regional tournament in discus with her throw of 126' 9". Christina also qualified to the state meet in shot put as she finished second place with throw of 40' as she broke her own school record. The lady Eagles had some great performances at the regional meet. Just missing the mark in the 1600m was Nicole Armstrong as she finishhed 5th place with a time of 5:12. Armstrong also finished 7th in the 800m. Anne Puzak finished 6th in pole vault with a personal best 8'9, while Rachel Olach had a personal best of 15' 3" to finish 9th in long jump. The 4 x 800 relay of Erin Schneider, Ali Fisher, Melissa Bruno, and Armstrong set a school record with a time of 9:39.41 but just missed qualifying to state as they finsihed 5th. Elisabeth Neumann ran a personal best in the 200m, capturing 8th place in a blazing time of 26.3. TheThe 4 x 400 relay of Schneider, Fisher, Bruno, and Lindsay Koehler took 6th place. In the team standings, Avon finished 3rd place out of 42 schools! Congrats ladies on an AMAZING season!! GOOD LUCK CHRISTINA!

DISTRICT CHAMPS!

DISTRICT CHAMPS!! Congratulations to the Girls' Track team as they captured the District Championship title on Saturday. This is the first time since 1980 that the Avon girls' have won. The 14 girls that qualified to the Regional meet include: Emily Michelich, Christina Herbst, Melissa Bruno, Erin Schneider, Elisabeth Neumann, Marlene Michelich,Jasmine Frye, Linsday Koehler, Nicole Armstrong, Ali Fisher, Rachel Olach, Anne Puzak, Alexandra Burkes, and Kaitlyn Foye. The Regional meet will be held this Thursday and Saturday at Ravenna High School as they try to qualify to the state championship. GOOD LUCK LADIES!!

Track - Strong First Day at Districts!

After the first day of competition, Avon Girls' have the lead at the District meet being held at MidviewHigh School. Three events have had their finals and Avon scored at the top of each. Leading the way was senior Christina Herbst who won the shot put with a throw of 38' .5". Also scoring was Marlene Michelich who finished third with a jump of 4' 10". The other final of the day was the 4 x 800m relay in which Avon finished 2nd. The relay of Erin Schneider, Emily Michelich, Melissa Bruno, and Nicole Armstrong along with Herbst and Michelich all advance to the Regional Meet next week. For Saturday, all 3 sprint relays qualified as well as many individuals. The competition will continue on Saturday at Midview. GO EAGLES!!

Girls Track - WSC Championships

Congratulations to the Girls' track team as they captured runner up at the WSC Chamionship. Individual champions included: Nicole Armstrong in the 800m, Christina Herbst in shot put and discus throw, and Marlene Michelich in high jump. Armstrong also broke her own school record in the mile as she captured 2nd place in a time of 5:12. Herbst set the school record in shot put (39' 4"), and also set the meet record in both throws. Michelich tied the meet record with her jump of 4' 10". The Eagles will be competing at the District meet on Thursday/Saturday this week at Midview. GO EAGLES!!

Girls Track - WSC Championships

The Lady Eagles are off to an impressive start at the WSC Track and Field Championship. After the first day of competition, the girls are leading the team scores. Two individuals captured event champion titles and set new meet records! Marlene Michelich defending her title in the high jump as she tied the meet record with a jump of 4' 10". Christina Herbst also set a new meet record and smashed the school record with her throw of 39' 4" in the shot put. The 4 x 800 relay consisting of Erin Schneider, Melissa Bruno, Emily Michelich, and Nicole Armstrong finished 2nd place in a season's best time of 9:53. The competiton will continue on Friday. GO EAGLES!!

Comet Relays Track Results

April 25, 2009

GIRLS - On Saturday at the Comet Relays in Amherst the Lady Eagles finished 11th out of 23 schools and among the top in Division II/III schools, by far the best finish at this meet in recent years. Points were gathered in the pole vault with Anne Puzak clearing 8’6” and Kaitlin Hopkins vaulting 7’6,” finishing third overall. In the running events the solid 3200m relay team of Erin Schneider, Emily Michelich, Kayla Welch and Nicole Armstrong secured a second place finish with a season best time of 10:07.3. The 400m relay quad of Alexandra Burkes, Kaitlin Foye, Elisabeth Neumann and Ali Fisher, and the 1600m relay team of Erin Schneider, Nicole Armstrong, Melissa Bruno and Ali Fisher both battled to a 6th place finishes with times of 51.7 (400m relay) and 4:14.42 (1600m relay), both season bests. Great job ladies!

BOYS - The weather on Saturday proved to treat our runners well at the Comet Relays on Saturday, where two school records were broken. The 400m relay team of Brett Jensen, Zak Wearsch, Garrett Gronowski and Bryent Robertson not only used the warm conditions but the stiff competition to fuel their record setting performance (44.32) and 2nd place finish. In addition the sprint medley team of Brett Jensen, Garrett Gronowski, Bryent Robertson and Kevin Krakora cruised to another record performance (1:36.56). A season best performance (8:36.58) and 8th place finish in the 3200 meter relay helped our relay team of Connor Friss, Andy Ventura, Tyler Kvach and Sam Bickley add to our point total for the day. Late in the day Christian Ortiz had a gutsy 300 hurdles performance, finishing 4th overall. All these efforts helped provide Avon with a respectable second place overall finish among Division II/III schools.

Boys Track Results

April 24, 2009

On Friday, April 17th the Avon boys team finished in a solid second place among the 11 Lorain County schools at the Midview-Lorain County Invitational. Brett Jensen, Zak Wearsch, Garrett Gronowski and Bryent Robertson highlighted the evening with school record-setting performances in both their 400 meter relay and 800 meter relay with new times of 45.07 and 1:33.62 seconds, respectively. Congratulations! Big points were gained throughout the evening from other stellar performances from Connor Friss in the 800 meters (3rd place, 2:09.65), Bryent Robertson in the 100 meters (3rd place, 11.26), Kevin Krakora in the 400 meters (3rd place, 53.91), Garrett Gronowski in the 200 meters (2nd place, 23.32) and the long jump (3rd place, 18’11 ½), Tyler Kvach in the 1600 meters (4th place, 4:57.38), Christian Ortiz in the 300 meter hurdles (3rd place, 42.93), Andy Ventura in the 3200 meter run (4th place, 10:19.10), Zak Wearsch in the 110 hurdles (2nd place, 16.41), and the 3200 meter relay team of Connor Friss, Tyler Kvach, Ryan Roberts, and Sam Bickley (3rd place, 8:45.23). The meet ended with an ever-exciting 1600 meter relay performance by Christian Ortiz, Justin Kaczmarek, Connor Friss and Kevin Krakora, finishing 2nd (3:41.33), 9/10 of second behind the stacked Amherst team. The boys travel for competition at the Amherst Comet Relays on Saturday, April 25th.

Girls Track Results

The girls split up to compete in both Chardon and Beachwood on Saturday, April 11th. In Chardon the ladies team walked away with a solid performance, placing 2nd out of 11 schools. Second place finishes were secured by the Christina Herbst in the shot put and discus, the distance medley team of Erin Schneider, Nicole Armstrong, Melissa Bruno and Emily Michelich, and the 4 x 100 team of Elisabeth Neumann, Jasmine Frye, Lindsay Koehler and Alexandra Burkes. Other noteworthy performances were the third place finish in the 4 x 800 by the young team of Maddy Toth, Natalie Michelich, Kayla Welch and Liz Bruno and in the 100m dash freshman Kaitlyn Foye rallied to a fifth place finish.

On Saturday, April 18th the Avon girls cruised to their first invitational victory of the year by decisively coming ahead of 10 other Lorain County high schools at the Midview-Lorain County Invitational. The Eagle Ladies scored in almost every event, consistently collecting the points throughout the day. Some of the top performances of the day were from Emmary Sharer (3rd place) in the 300 hurdles, Nicole Armstrong (1st place) in the 800m run, the 4 x 800 meter relay (1st place) of Kayla Welch, Emily Michelich, Melissa Bruno and Nicole Armstrong, and Kayla Welch (2nd place) in the 3200m run. The girls head to Amherst Comet Relays on Saturday, April 25th.

Track at Avon Lake

Last Saturday the Lady Eagles track and field squad battled the elements and earned a solid fifth place finish in a competitive field of 13 teams only being outdistanced by larger schools. Second place finishes were secured by the 4 x 800 meter team of Erin Schneider, Kayla Welch, Emily Michelich and Nicole Armstrong, the 4 x 400 meter team of Melissa Bruno, Erin Schneider, Nicole Armstrong and Ali Fisher, and an individual 800 meter performance by Nicole Armstrong. Other noteworthy performances include Marlene Michelich’s clearing of 4ft 8inches (3rd place) in the high jump, Christina Herbst’s launch of 113 feet (3rd place) in the discus, and the speedy performance of the 4 x 100 meter relay team of Alexandra Burkes, Elisabeth Neumann, Jasmine Frye and Ali Fisher (4th place). The Lady Eagles compete tonight at Vermilion and move this Saturday to compete at both the Beachwood Invitational and the Chardon Hilltopper Invitational. Good luck this weekend, girls!!!

Girls Indoor Track

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE GIRLS TRACK TEAM! Severeal athletes competed at the state indoor track meet on Saturday at the University of Akron. The girls 4 x 800 had a impressive performance as they captured 3rd place in a time of 10:05. The girls took more than 30 seconds off of their time and as they smashed our school indoor record. The relay included Erin Schneider, Melissa Bruno, Emily Michelich, and Nicole Armstrong. Also making it to the awards podium was Christina Herbst as she finished 8th place in the shot put with a throw of 35' 5". Erin Schneider just missed the awards stand as she finished 9th place. The 4 x 400 relay of Liz Bruno, Erin Schneider, Nicole Armstrong, and Melissa Bruno also qualified for the State Indoor meet. Way to go Eagles!!
